Task 4 - How Did You Use Media Technologies in the Construction and Research, Planning and Evaluation Stages?

Pre-Production:

In the preproduction I used a few different media technologies that allowed me to prepare for the music video.

I used the internet as a research tool during the preparation of the music video. I used search engines such as Google to research our target audince and other bands/artists in the same genre, essentially C2C themselves and what their star image is although that wasn't what we were going for, but still it would have helped my understanding of this genre and this song better as well as what i can do with our own made up star. I also used sites such as soundcloud to listen to similar kind of songs and soundcloud is considered as the youtube(a site where you can upload video clips and watch freely)  for audio clips.

I also use mobile phone technology to upload pictures of the studio on to our blog so i can plan the set design and work with the space given. This also enabled us to record our progess and planning. I used my Samsung Galaxy S4 to digitally record, this technogly allowed me to personally upload my thoughts and views, posting this Blogger and enabling me to have a visual digital record of my planning progess. Using my phone I was also able to take pictures of group work that we were doing on paper and post a digital copy eg set designs and mind maps.

Additionally in the pre-production process I created an animatic storyboard where I used Final Cut Pro(A professional editing software) to piece together my animation and all the shots. I used a wav audio soundtrack of the song that played over the top of the sequence. Additionally this help me structure and prepare the real music video and give me an idea of what order the shots should go in.
Research and planning the animatic:

Post Production:
In the post production I designed the website using a site called WIX. Wix.com is a cloud-based web development platform that allows users to create professional HTML5 websites and mobile sites, through use of their online drag and drop tools. Users can add functionalities such as social plug-ins, eCommerce, contact forms, email marketing, and community forums to their websites using variety of Wix developed and third-party application.

Tutorial on how to build a site with WIX:

Digital technology enables me to think with a wider view and inspires creativity, allows decisions to be make and aids progress. It inpires creatively as the use of photoshop enable us to create a digitpak that won't not be possible without digital technology . It allows decision making as the order of the shots and which shots to use was made  when using the final cut pro software. Finally it aids progress as it has allowed us to produce a successful medi acampegin and music production.

Director's Commentary Script

Molly: throughout this music video commentary we are going to be talking about how we used digital technology all the way through the course to create a successful creative product.
Archie: During the pre-production one of our set tasks was to create an animatic for our music video, in order to do this, we had to film each frame of our story board with a Sony NX5 camera. After filming each frame of the story board we uploaded the footage onto final cut pro.
Giorgio: We cut the shots together using final cut pro, this helped us to realise what the finished product would look like.
Shane: After finishing the animatic we posted it onto blogger. Blogger is a site that we used throughout the media course, it is a great piece of online software because it allows you to have an ongoing diary of the progress throughout the course.
Molly: We also considered google as a very important platform because it gave us direct access to online media featuring on sites such as YouTube and twitter, Which allowed us to share and collaborate and take influence from existing videos and artists.
Archie: Another way in which we used google as a tool was for our research and planning stages of our course, it gave us the access to videos, pictures and web information, as a result it helped us on our way to creating a good product because it was less time consuming.
Giorgio: Wesch argues that information is shared throughout the world using different platforms such as google and YouTube, this allowed us to research audiences, artists and locations relevant to our project, doing this all via web 2.0.
Molly: On the shoot day we used a vast amount of digital technologies, however, the most important one would be the camera. We Used a Sony FS100 with various lenses of a fixed focal length for the different shot sizes we wished to create. We also used a digital clapperboard for lip sync purposes.
Archie: Another piece of technology that was extremely useful on the shoot day was a camera placed on the ceiling of the studio what this achieved was a time-lapse of the shoot day.
Shane: The reason why we decided to use this was because we felt that it was important to show the details of the production because our target audience can really capture and understand the atmosphere that we were trying to portray.
Giorgio: This was great because it allowed us to look back and see exactly what happened on the shoot day, another advantage of using this meant that we could see the progress of the shoot day and the creative as well as the decision making aspect.
Shane: for the post production of our video we used various amounts of digital technologies to achieve what we wanted to, we made use mainly of Photoshop for the editing of our CD digipack. We made use of final cut pro for the editing of the footage we had shot on the day. And finally, after effects to change the look of the video once we had edited it.
Molly: We used final cut pro, firstly, to select all the shots we wanted and bin the ones that we were not going to use, then lip sync the video to the audio track, this was all initially done on the timeline by using markets for specific parts of the song, on both the footages audio with the playback and the main audio track to lip sync the footage before editing.
Archie: We also used After FX to put the kaleidoscope effect on the clips because the whole video was shot on a green screen.
Giorgio: Due to the fact that we had constructed an animatic and storyboard beforehand, we had a fairly strong idea of how we wanted the video to run as a whole. This meant that at the point where we started editing the footage on final cut pro, the process ran very smoothly.
Shane: We were using digital technology meaning that we could go back and re edit decisions we had already made, meaning that we could get a stronger flow to the narrative.

Feedbacks From Focus Group

Feedback from youtube music video

Here are some screen shots of the stats on our music video from youtube:

As you see from the demographics most of our viewers are female based in the UK, more than half of them have watched the video from their phone.

99 percent of the viewers watched it through their Computer.
There are up and downs for the amount of views and each time we share the video on facebook the views goes up and after 1 day or say it comes back down again.

Prezi

Prezi is a online presentation software and storytelling tool for presenting ideas and virtual canvas. It works with a zooming user interface which allows us to zoom in and out of the presentation and allows users to display and navigate through information within a 2.5D or a parallax 3D space on the Z-axis. We are going to use Prezi to do our evaluation task 3.

Focus Group

A focus group is a qualitative research in which a group of people are asked about their preferences, opinions and belief towards a product, service or concept but in this case it's gonna be about our music video and the marketing campaign for the artist which are the CD digipack and the website.
we are gonna be organizing our focus group by asking around 5 people.

Email to audiences for monkey survey

After we made our survey on monkey survey, we sent it to around 20 people with the link to the survey the music video as well as the website.

Preparation for task 3

As a group task on preparation for our Task 3 : Audience feedbacks. we have to come up with at least 20 questions on both demographic and Vals, which stands for Values, Attitudes and Lifestyles. In this task we are encourage to use monkey survey to help us create questionnaires. after we came up with 20 appropriate questions, we then have to come up with an introduction for our questionnaire to send out at the same time of the questionnaires, in order to point out our purpose of sending out these questionnaire and what we aiming them to do.

Task 1

We used a lot of media conventions in our music video. We watched a lot of music videos that were in the same genre as our song so we could get an idea of how to make ours with real life influences

For our digipak we used the normal convention of a picture of the artist on the front cover, most CD covers use this, and we used it because it attracts and audiences interest as they know whom the artist is. The bright and lively colors that we used are commonly seen in dance music videos and on CD covers, so we wanted to use the convention so that it will cause the target audience that we are aiming for to look at our CD and so it will gain popularity. On the back cover of our digipak we have the track listing of the songs on the album, this is a convention that all CDs use because they have to show the songs on the album so people will buy it. We have a barcode on the CD also, on the back, which is another convention of most albums, and it is in the bottom left corner, which is also a normal place for it to be.

Evaluation Of Rough Cut

We have now finished editing a rough cut of our music video, this means that this is a draft leading up to the final project. We edited using Final Cut Pro software on a Mac computer. we started off with selecting the shots we want and putting all the shots we don't want into a bin. after we did that, we layer roughly all the shots we liked more onto the time line and synced each single of them to the beat of the music therefore  all of the shots would be in sync with the music, for example the lip-sync would be in time along with all of the other footage. However we did not need to sync the ‘random’ as they could be place anywhere along the timeline. After going through all of the clips I used the ‘b’ tool, which stood for blade in order to cut our parts of the footage that I liked or that synchronized with the music. We also rejected shots ‘delete’ them if they did not capture the music correctly or if the lip-sync was out of time. We also rejected parts of footage that perhaps went out of focus or if the act moved out of camera, which means that the framing would not be correct and the act would not be the focus point. While editing the shots we put markers down on shots where there was something significant, for example when the cards started to fall. We also put markers down to make it easier for us to match a shot to the beat music, this was especially useful during the flip as we were able to put the landing point matching to the drop in the music. we also had to cut a lot of the clips to fit in to track and as well as layering different shots because our final plan was to put everything in kaleidoscope therefore if we layer the same clip in different places on the scene would work really well with that and that's when things gets more creative because we have to decide where to put the same shots and how long do we want it to be on there because we may want to make the 2 of the same shots a bit out of time just to make it more interesting. Then we made sure that all of our cuts where clean and that they synced with the music, as our song is jumpy and fast pace we made sure that all the transitions into a different shot were on the beat of the music. We did not have any problems with continuity, and in fact we played around with this as we were able to get three different shot types of Seb on the DJ decks, for example one of him in a horse head and then cutting to one without the horse head. I was cautious to keep a variation of the shots, however instead we learnt about the ‘flop’ tool where I was able to turn shots around to make it look like the artist was looking into a mirror, this will be effective in out post production when we introduce the element into the green screen.

This is a screen shot of when we were matching the clips to the track:

Our project has changed form our original plan, it does follow a similar pattern but we have introduced new shots into different places. I was enthusiastic about finishing the rough cut, however because we had so many different shots it meant that it tool a long time. Primarily I was not sure how to use the software but after experimenting and watching others I soon learnt. Therefore our video is to show a sixties style however crossed between a contemporary feel in order to target a youthful audience. The meaning was constructed through the upbeat dancing, which synchronies to the upbeat song. We also however aimed to create a festival style as we introduced a clown who juggled and smashed a guitar, and we also introduced a doll like girl playing around with cards.

overall our feedbacks were quite positive, the way we edited so that images overlap and move into other footage was well received and they though that was what made our image stand out. They also noted that they like the place where we put the acts in and how it would change on the beat.
